First decision

When to book

Rifugi open bookings one at a time, most in September or October.

There is no single release date here, which is the difference from the Tour du Mont Blanc. Each rifugio opens its own bookings on its own schedule: most in September or October for the following summer, some not until spring.

For July and August, start in January and expect to chase them individually. Most nights on this route have one hut and no alternative, so a night you cannot book is a night you cannot walk.

Prices and season dates checked September 2026. Confirm with the operator before booking.

Start at Lago di Braies (stage 1, 1 place), Rifugio Scotoni (stage 2, 1 place), Rifugio Città di Fiume (stage 4, 3 places), Rifugio Vazzoler (stage 6, 1 place), Passo Duran (stage 7, 3 places), Rifugio Pian de Fontana (stage 8, 1 place) have the fewest beds on this route, so book those first and fit the rest of the walk around them.

The Alta Via 1 hut availability page shows, night by night for 2027, which huts that book online still have beds, checked four times an hour, with bed alerts for full nights.

The gap that shapes the trip

The longest stretch without a bed

8.7 km, between Passo Duran and Rifugio Pian de Fontana. Nothing in that stretch is within 2 km of the path, so it is the section that decides how you split the walk.

Local rules

Camping on the Alta Via 1

One of the 8 overnight stops has a campsite within 2 km of the path: Rifugio Coldai.

Camping is forbidden. The Alta Via 1 crosses three nature parks and wild camping and bivouacking are prohibited throughout, which is stricter than most people expect of the Dolomites.

The bivacchi you will pass are emergency shelters rather than accommodation: free, unstaffed, always open, no bedding and no food. Treat them as a way out of trouble, not as a plan.

Carrying less

Baggage transfer

Six of the rifugi on this route cannot be reached by any transfer.

Luggage transfer is available and is a common add-on, but not to every night. Bags cannot be delivered to Rifugio Fanes, Sennes or Lavarella, Averau or Nuvolau, Coldai, Vazzoler, or Fontana, which is most of the walk.

In practice this is a carry-everything route with a transfer at either end rather than one you can hand your bag off on.

Method

How this list is put together

We list published stays within 2 km of the route that have a website or a phone number, and are not permanently closed. Distances are measured from the trail itself, not from the village centre.

Each night leads with the stay our itinerary uses, then any stay we have picked out for that stop, then the places at the stop itself, then the rated ones by review count. The rest of that night's options follow.

Ratings and review counts come from public data and were current when this page was last built.

A further 1 stays sit beyond the last overnight stop, at the finish or on the walk out. They are useful if you split the walk differently.
