First decision
When to book
No fixed booking date, but the remote stops have very few beds.
Book when your dates are set. April to September is the season and the middle is busy.
The thin stops are the ones that decide the itinerary. Where a crossing ends at a single inn, that inn is the whole night, and it is taken months ahead in summer.

Crowden (stage 1, 1 place), Standedge (stage 2, 1 place), Mankinholes (stage 3, 2 places), Cowling (stage 5, 2 places), Bowes (stage 10, 2 places), Langdon Beck (stage 12, 2 places), Byrness (stage 18, 3 places) have the fewest beds on this route, so book those first and fit the rest of the walk around them.

Local rules
Camping on the Pennine Way
11 of the 18 overnight stops have a campsite within 1.2 miles of the path: Crowden, Stanbury, Malham, Hawes, Keld, Bowes, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Dufton, Greenhead, Once Brewed and Bellingham.
There is no right to wild camp in England, but the Pennine Way is the one route here where the convention is real: high on the moors, above the last wall, arriving late and leaving early. That is a tolerance, not a permission, and it stops where the route drops into the dales.
The bothies are the other option. Greg's Hut on Cross Fell is the best known, free and always open, and on that crossing it is the only shelter for hours.
Carrying less
Baggage transfer
Carriers cover it, but the remote crossings limit where a bag can reach you.
Sherpa Van and Brigantes both run the Pennine Way. The constraint is the high crossings: where the route spends a day above the road, a van cannot follow it, so those nights have to be planned around what you carry.

How this list is put together
We list published stays within 1.2 miles of the route that have a website or a phone number, and are not permanently closed. Distances are measured from the trail itself, not from the village centre.
Each night leads with the stay our itinerary uses, then any stay we have picked out for that stop, then the places at the stop itself, then the rated ones by review count. The rest of that night's options follow.
Ratings and review counts come from public data and were current when this page was last built.
A further 22 stays sit beyond the last overnight stop, at the finish or on the walk out. They are useful if you split the walk differently.
